For these past days, I have been working on some “marketing material” for one of our projects. While the game is made in Unity, and I could have used in-game objects to make the marketing (build a scene, or use the in-engine characters) I decided to use iClone instead, because the character quality is a lot better than Unity. Besides, iClone has some really nice rendering features.
iClone offers a really good rendering that can display skin, PBR materials, SSS, and other things. The renderer is “WYSIWYG” (what you see is what you get) so you can always know 100% how your final render will look like.
You can apply materials from the Content pane, and then you can modify them in the material editor. There are different kinds of materials, like PBR, Traditional (which would be like the “Blinn” or “Phong” from any 3D package like Maya or Max), Hair and SSS (humans imported from CC3 also have the Human Skin, Human Eyes, etc., materials).
One of my favorite materials is SSS. SSS can be used to create wax and skin, but it also can be used to make marble (if you have seen a marble column in real life, you may have noticed it has this very slight SSS effect to it which is pretty cool). The following image shows an SSS material applied to an object, all lights turned off except the key light.
The iClone renderer also has these nice bloom effects. In the HDR section of the Visual tab, you can turn on HDR Effect to get the bloom effects. You can also add some extra glare to the scene. Also, there you can tweak the tone-mapping settings. The following image shows another scene I made, just with the bloom effects.

iClone also allows you to use either LRI or HDRI for image-based lighting (IBL). The software already includes a few images you can use, and you can make different adjustments to the lighting, like changing the lighting intensity and rotating the image. You can even add different images to different IBL clips, so you can blend from one image to another in real time.
Another nice feature is post effects. In the Visual tab, there’s a Post Effect section where you can add various effects. These are various effects that let you change the look of an image, and I have already set up a few effects in the scene I’m working on. But first, let me show you the scene without any effect.

iClone includes various post effects, like color filter, lens blur, film noise, and a lot of LUTs to change the coloring of your image. It also offers a very good toon shading effect if you want to have some “illustration look” on your image. Also, combining the toon shading with some post effects can produce very dramatic results.
Rendering is something you should really take advantage of, if you are using iClone, even if you are using a third-party engine like UE or Unity. Not only the rendering quality is very good, it already includes a lot of post-production features you would need to do in a third party application.
